Pond Volume Calculations
Many customers are accustomed to speaking about the volume of water in acre-feet.
The unit, acre-foot, is actually one acre of water 1 foot in depth.
An acre is approximately 209 ft x 209 ft. An acre is 43, 560 square feet; therefore one acre-foot is 43,560 cubic ft.
One cubic foot is 1728 cubic inches (12 x 12 x 12)
231 cubic inches is one US Gallon
Therefore one cubic foot is 7.4805 US gallons
One cubic foot = .028317 cubic meters
Therefore 1 cubic meter =264.17 US Gallons
Then: one acre-foot is 7.4805 x 43,560= 325,850.58 gallons
If you have 150,000 acre-feet of water you would have almost 49 billion US gallons of water. Please note we use the term water very loosely.
To determine how many acre-feet someone has, would mean taking the length x width x depth (averages) to determine how many cubic ft of liquid they have. Then you would divide the total by 43,560 to get the number of acre-feet. This figure is what you use to determine the total gallons by multiplying the number of acre ft by 325,850 gallons.
